Quick commerce made a promise most traditional warehouse design was never built to keep. A micro-fulfilment centre is not a smaller version of a distribution centre, it is a fundamentally different design problem, solved for speed over a tiny footprint instead of scale over a large one.
The footprint is the constraint, not the opportunity
Most micro-fulfilment sites are converted retail units or small warehouses, often under 2,000 square feet. Every design decision has to account for that ceiling from the start. There is no room for inefficient aisle widths or slotting mistakes that a bigger facility could absorb.
Pick path is the whole game
With order windows measured in minutes, the physical distance a picker travels per order is the single biggest lever on whether you hit your delivery promise. High-velocity SKUs need to sit within a few steps of the pack station, and the layout needs to be re-slotted regularly as demand shifts, not set once at launch and left alone.
Vertical density does the work horizontal space cannot
Since floor area is fixed and usually small, height becomes the primary lever for capacity. Multi-tier shelving and tightly planned racking runs let a small unit carry a full quick-commerce catalogue without expanding the footprint, provided the vertical layout is planned around actual pick frequency rather than filled in arbitrarily.
The catalogue-to-footprint ratio that decides everything
A micro-fulfilment centre typically packs a meaningful grocery or convenience catalogue, often 2,000 or more SKUs, into a footprint that would feel cramped as a retail store. Making that work depends on maximising SKU density per square metre without slowing down picking, which is a genuinely different design problem from either a traditional warehouse or a retail floor plan.
Why standard warehouse racking rarely fits directly
Pallet racking, built for bulk storage and forklift access, wastes enormous amounts of space in a micro-fulfilment context where most items are picked as single units. Dense small-parts shelving, sized specifically to your bin dimensions rather than a generic shelf depth, is what actually makes the SKU density work without turning the unit into a maze for pickers.
Zoning: ambient, chilled and fast-pick, done properly
A well-zoned micro-fulfilment centre separates ambient, chilled and frozen storage cleanly, and usually carves out a dedicated fast-pick zone near packing for the highest-velocity SKUs regardless of category. Getting this zoning wrong, mixing categories or placing fast movers far from packing, quietly adds seconds to every single pick, which compounds fast across thousands of daily orders.
Realistic fitout timelines for a rollout strategy
Because micro-fulfilment strategies usually mean opening several small sites rather than one large facility, fitout speed genuinely matters at a business level, not just a convenience one. A well-planned unit, with layout finalised in advance and racking manufactured to standard specifications, can go from empty space to live store in as little as 72 hours. A unit designed from scratch on-site typically takes weeks longer.
A micro-fulfilment centre is not a small warehouse. It is a different design problem, and the racking has to be chosen for that problem specifically, not borrowed from a bigger building.
